This 1,700 square feet apartment duplex is located within a narrow 19th Century townhouse in New York City’s Upper East Side. We combined two floor-through apartments to create a modern duplex residence. The home includes a reception hall, living/dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a roof deck.

A new stair hall unifies the living and sleeping spaces by providing a dramatic vertical focus. The two-story entry hall has artisan plaster walls, a Chambord limestone floor and a sculptural wooden stair constructed as cabinetry from quarter sawn cherry lumber.

The spaces and detailing are designed to provide a quiet respite from the intensity of contemporary urban life. Large steel and glass windows look out to peaceful private gardens.  Materials used include artisan plaster, limestone, cherry, steel, glass, stainless steel, slate, maple, granite, rubber flooring, and sisal carpet.
